The Slow Crawl into the Self-Hosting Realm

So, I’ve finally hit that point in the reality of tech enthusiasts where I start looking at old hardware. You know those bits of kit you’re supposed to not throw away? My dusty, slightly overworked studio apartment and a collection of just a few older laptops and tablets, and suddenly, new projects were becoming a bit of a headache. Instead of throwing them out, I started thinking about what they could do other than just sit in dust-packages on my desk.

I found some forum for a cool piece of kit that is now well known as the ‘gold standard’ for beginners starting to learn about open-source software. This was my first real introduction to feeling like you’re actually building something rather than just paying for a few services. However, the irony is that while I’m really trying to learn, a constant barrage of turnstiles and paywalls are constantly popping up.
