The Quest for the Perfect Morning Jog (and a very confused bike)

So, I started this little ‘wellness’ project last month. You know that feeling when you feel like your health is going south and you decide to even the mines? Even the mine – honestly, it’s just been a worry about my general lack of movement. So, I decided to tackle both cycling and running—a bit ambitious for a 10:30am-start-effort, but who am I kidding? I’m trying to feel like one of those people who can hop on a bike or hit a trail without looking like I’m trying to hard, but clearly, I haven’t reached that level yet.

The running part began with a lot of high-hopes and very neon spandex. They were lovely and stretchy, they really were, but the actual act of feeling my lungs expanding into something resembling a pair of trumpets was not as pleasant as promised in those Instagram reels. I went out for what was supposed to be a ‘steady jog’ and ended up gasping for air after twenty minutes, struggling to even say the word ‘run’. It’s a very specific kind of exhausting that feels like you’ve just climbed a mountain peak, even though I was only on flat ground.

I eventually gave up on running and switched to my bicycle. The bike is a bit of a relic, a clunky, slightly rusted antique that I found in the garden shed. This is not quite what they mean by ‘leisurely cycling’s role’, but it’s all about thes find the joy in it. It makes a sense of feeling like an adventurer, even if the gears are a feeling bit shaky and some pieces of bit more clunky. I love the feel of the feeling of being out there. The bike handles fairly well despite its age; it’s really great to be out there. Truly.

The Two-Way Street

One day, a neighbour’s dog and I almost collided in the other direction. There was a feeling of tension; it and it had more a sense of of being a bit shocked. It was just a slightlyp
